Trevor Barsby earns new XXXX Gold Queensland Bulls Deal

Queensland Cricket today announced that Trevor Barsby has been reappointed as coach of the XXXX GOLD Queensland Bulls for a further two seasons.

Today’s XXXX GOLD Queensland Bulls media launch featured the announcement that Barsby had accepted a new two-year deal upon his return from the recent Ashes tour where he served as assistant coach to Australian coach Tim Nielsen.

Barsby competed his first season in the role after being appointed in May last year to succeed Terry Oliver as the Bulls coach for the 2008-09 season.

The 100-game veteran tasted success in his inaugural season in the job with Queensland making three Finals and winning the Ford Ranger Cup. Read more…

XXXX Gold Queensland Bulls James Hopes picked for season opener

Australian One Day allrounder James Hopes has been named in the opening XXXX GOLD Queensland Bulls team of the season for Sunday’s Ford Ranger Cup clash against Western Australia at the WACA.

Hopes, who will be in action tonight in South Africa as Australia defends its ICC Champions Trophy crown in the Final against New Zealand, will make his cameo appearance for the Bulls prior to Australia’s departure to India for a seven-match ODI series later this month.

The 13-man Queensland squad named today contains 10 members of the side that won the Ford Ranger Cup title last season, with left-handed Toombul batsman Wade Townsend and 18-year-old pace bowler Alister McDermott coming into the one-day line-up for the first time. Read more…

XXXX Gold Queensland Bulls – Dunk to lead way

XXXX GOLD Queensland Bulls rookie contracted player Ben Dunk will captain the first Queensland team to compete in the new Cricket Australia Futures League competition next week.

The match between the Queensland Academy of Sport and the Australian Capital Territory at Allan Border Field starting on Tuesday will be part of the inaugural round played in the innovative national youth-based competition that was announced today by Cricket Australia.

Dunk, the back-up wicket-keeper to Bulls gloveman Chris Hartley, will skipper a team that contains just three players over the age of 23, the maximum allowed under the new guidelines for the Futures League which has replaced the previous Cricket Australia Cup 2nd XI competition. Read more…

XXXX Gold Queensland Bulls Hit the Sunshine Coast next week

The XXXX GOLD Queensland Bulls will ramp up their pre-season cricket build-up next week on the Sunshine Coast with a swag of cricket and promotional appearances, including the Suncorp Twenty20 Challenge.

The Bulls will play two 50-over and two Twenty20 matches against the PKF Tasmanian Tigers and West End Redbacks as part of their preparations for the 2009-10 season, which starts on 11 October.

All available contracted players will attend the Bulls camp from Sunday through to Thursday, with coach Trevor Barsby and his staff putting the finishing touches to their off-season work ahead of the start of the summer.

Tasmania and South Australia have been regular visitors to the Coast in spring in recent years, and the Bulls will engage them in a round-robin practice series from Monday 28 September. Read more…

Former All Black Nathan Mauger today announced the launch of a significant Canterbury coaching programme to improve junior schoolboy rugby in the region.

The junior academy, Mauger Developments Rugby, has the backing of All Black Dan Carter and Crusaders assistant coach Daryl Gibson. The first intake begins at Christchurch Boys’ High School, Mauger’s old school, on October 12.

This will involve coaching three groups of boys 11 to 12 years, 13 to 14 years and 15 to 16 years every Monday for the school term. It’s believed the programme targeted at junior players and to be expanded next year will be the only one of its kind in New Zealand. Read more…

queensland-cricketBrisbane will host two of cricket’s most explosive hitters going head to head when Andrew Symonds and David Warner lock horns at Allan Border Field next week.

The pair of Twenty20 tyros will be on show when Brisbane takes on Sydney in the battle between the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s XI and the Sydney Lord Mayor’s XI on Sunday 13 September as part of this month’s Brisbane 150 celebrations.

The teams will meet in a free Twenty20 match as part of the Bulls KFC Family Fun Day at Queensland Cricket Headquarters at 1 Bogan Street Albion between 9am and 1pm. Read more…
