“Countdown to Copenhagen” is the theme to launch THINK! Thursdays, a series of thought-provoking conversations inspired by short presentations from guest speakers at Denmark House. Beginning on 12 November, THINK! Thursdays will run every Thursday from 5-7 pm throughout the year and presentations will be based on the theme “Countdown to Copenhagen: COP15”.

The Blind Factory
While there might be a government rebate for ceiling insulation, window coverings also need to be evaluated by Victorian home owners looking to save the environment and money.
Brett Thomas, Director of Victorian icon The Blind Factory, estimates that poor window cover choices cost home owners in excess of $250 every summer.
“Home owners tend to think more about keeping cool with the air conditioner along with insulation in the ceiling, rather than looking at the more obvious choice of window coverings.

19 October 2009: Greenpower Energy Limited (ASX:GPP) has signed a Farm-In Agreement allowing Regal Resources Limited (ASX:RER) to establish an underground coal to liquids process at Greenpower’s Exploration Licence 4860. The area covers 154 km2 and is 10km from Traralgon.
A condition precedent is establishing the existence of a reserve of coal or carbonaceous material sufficient to support a commercial operation at the site. A further condition is successful renewal of Exploration Licence 4860, due to expire in August 2010.
Regal is currently planning to commence pilot testing its coal-to-liquids technology at Oak Park west of Melbourne. Assuming this is successful it will use this technology at the Gippsland site. Read more…

Up to 10 million Mallee Eucalypt trees to be planted across Australia
14 October 2009: Carbon Conscious Limited (ASX: CCF) and BP have signed contracts for a large scale Australian bio sequestration project involving the planting of up to 10 million trees to absorb carbon from the atmosphere.
The deal signals an important move by BP to secure capacity in the Australian carbon forest sink industry. The contract involves BP paying Carbon Conscious to create large scale commercial plantings of Mallee Eucalypt trees on less viable agricultural land in the wheatbelt regions of Australia. Read more…

Peter Garrett - Minister for Environment, Heritage and the Arts
Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, Peter Garrett today launched the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest book; Climate of Australia.
“Australians have always been interested in weather and climate, and this book is an essential resource for anyone interested in or seeking information on Australia’s climate,” said Mr Garrett.
“With the recent history of severe weather events, and our changing climate, our attention has been strongly focused on the importance of monitoring and understanding the trends, patterns and extremes of Australia’s climate.”

The organisers of Repco Rally Australia have released preliminary information collected by an independent team of environmental scientists from Biolink Pty Ltd, led by respected scientist Dr Stephen Phillips, following the conclusion of the event last Sunday.
Dr Phillips explained the process put in place for the rally -
”Firstly, in the months prior to the rally we thoroughly inspected the entire competition route and noted all potential habitats for koalas, lyrebirds and any other threatened species. With the organisers we assembled a team of people and a plan to install various measures as outlined in our final reports of July 2009.

BHP Billiton today announced approval for the Talc Redesign Project at the Mount Keith operation.
The Talc Redesign Project is expected to commence operation in 2011, with an estimated total investment of US$ 152 million.
The Talc Redesign Project will enable the Mount Keith Concentrator to obtain full value from processing talc-bearing ore types.
The project will support the production and cost improvements at Mount Keith operation. This will assist in sustaining the production level at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter at approximately 100,000 tonnes per annum. Read more…
