“The Edge of the Possible” is a film that charts the dramatic creation of the iconic Sydney Opera House, featuring rare interviews with Danish architect Jørn Utzon as he reflects on his role in the conception and construction of the landmark. The film won the Gold Plaque Best Documentary at the HUGO Awards; a special film-maker’s screening will show at Denmark House on Thursday 19 November at 7pm.
Jørn Utzon was awarded first prize in an international architecture competition to design an Opera House for Sydney. In 1957 he flew to Australia to begin work on the construction of the greatest building Australia has ever seen and, indeed, one of the finest achievements of modern architecture. In 1966, Utzon was forced away from the project and has never returned to Australia, defeated by political issues that he was not able to overcome. Read more…

Emerging Brisbane artist Jacqueline Hill recently had paintings accepted at a Brisbane Masters selection exhibition and in the same weekend received an award at a prestigious north coast art show, leading her to host her own exhibition at Gallery 54 in Paddington next month.
The ‘Busy Waiting’ exhibition will feature Jacqueline’s exploration of nature’s serenity juxtaposed with the hectic and exciting urban lifestyle in which we enjoy living yet simultaneously are its captives.
Each acrylic, pastel and watercolour artwork has been inspired by her personal journey of seeking simplicity in a busy and mad world. Read more…

Leading New Zealand artist Jane Kellahan has tonight won the $A20,000 Australian Cricket Art Prize.
Fourteen Kiwi artists along with 218 Aussie painters submitted works for the inaugural Aussie cricket art prize competition, in which 32 paintings were selected.
Kellahan, from Wellington, was the only New Zealander to make the final and she was announced the winner at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) at a gala function tonight. She received a phone call from the organisers in Sydney earlier today. Read more…

What do jeweller Michael Hill, cricketer Richard Hadlee, equestrian rider Mark Todd and bungy jumper AJ Hackett all have in common? They are among 11 famous names in a rare first big portrait art exhibition opening at Queenstown Airport Terminal tomorrow night.
The big close-up paintings are by Cromwell’s award-winning artist Deidre Copeland who just recently gave birth to her second child. Deidre had all the works completed just before she went into labour.
The exhibition features 11 of New Zealand’s notable New Zealanders. They include mayor Invercargill mayor Tim Shadbolt, former Stock Exchange chairman and NZ Olympic president Eion Edgar, world hall of fame cricketer Richard Hadlee, double equestrian Olympic gold medallist Mark Todd, Queenstown mayor Clive Geddes, bungy inventor AJ Hackett, Everest climber and top expedition leader Guy Cotter, winemaker Alan Brady, businessman and entrepreneur Michael Hill, writer Owen Marshall and speaker-entertainer Gary McCormick. Leading NZ nude artist Melissa Sharplin will bare her latest retro series at Wellington’s famous Affordable Art Show starting in Wellington on July 31.
