A number of different issues have made the qualifying day at the L&H 500 at Phillip Island a challenge for New South Welshman, David Wall.

Grappling with the set up of their Wilson Security Racing #333 V8 Supercar, David and his co-driver Leanne Tander struggled in qualifying with both drivers starting their respective qualifying races towards the rear of the field.

David, Leanne and the team worked on the car set up between the qualifying sessions and the first of the qualifying races. The team were able to make a few improvements to the car and David was happier with the car during his qualifying race.

David’s race got off to a great start, getting off the line well and pushing hard, David was able to pass four drivers in just the first half of the lap.

Unfortunately, all his hard work was undone when he was hit from behind by Brad Jones in turn 10, sending him into a spin. The rear of David’s car was then hit heavily by Tony Ricciardello causing significant damage to his rear bumper. David was able to rejoin the circuit but was forced to pit shortly after so the team could remove the loose bodywork.

David rejoined at the rear of the field but pushed hard and was able to pass a few drivers. This, along with a number of the drivers ahead of him needing to take their compulsory pitstop, meant he was able to work his way into 18th position by the end of the race.

With Leanne finishing her qualifying race in 28th position, the pair will start tomorrow’s endurance race in 29th position.

David has also struggled to sit comfortably in the car this weekend. Given the significant height difference between David and his co-driver a compromise position had to be found. Unfortunately this has left David somewhat battered and bruised even after today’s short sessions. The team will work with David and Leanne tonight to work towards making the car more comfortable for both drivers during the endurance race tomorrow.

David is confident that they have a car that will be deliver solid and consistent results during the race so is hopeful of a better day tomorrow.
